Local diversity in phenological responses of migratory lake sturgeon to warm winters

چکیده
Rich intraspecific diversity in traits that shape responses to environmental conditions implies effects of climate change will differ within species or even populations. Nevertheless, few studies investigate how different groups respond climatic fluctuations, and most risk assessments rely upon species-wide generalizations. We studied among-year variation air temperature on the spring migratory phenology a metapopulation lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens waters connecting Lake Huron Erie Laurentian Great Lakes. Sturgeon here express multiple phenotypes all spawn either St. Clair River Detroit but their use after spawning more than 86 000 km2 accessible river habitat. Acoustic tracking over nine years (2012–2020) revealed mixed phenological late-winter temperatures, with three arriving at rivers earlier during warm one whose arrival was consistent across regardless temperature. Notably, two same overwinter lakes entered greater synchrony because advanced its while other did not. The results indicated weather could alter dynamics broader community, exemplify complexity hidden beneath broadscale generalizations species' response change.

An Eco-Evolutionary Model for Demographic and Phenological Responses in Migratory Birds
Many migratory birds have changed their timing of arrival at breeding grounds in response to recent climate change. Understanding the adaptive value and the demographic consequences of these shifts are key challenges. To address these questions we extend previous models of phenological adaptation to climate change under territory competition to include feedback from population dynamics, winter ...
متن کاملGenetic Analysis of Lake Sturgeon Tissue Relative to Sex Determination
Background(s) and Objective(s) In mammals and birds, sex is dictated by the chromosomal constitution and is thus genetic (mammalian males are XY and females are XX). However, many fi shes have environmental sex determination without sex chromosomes. Their sex is determined by egg incubation temperature or by social status. The objective of this project was to evaluate the working hypothesis tha...
متن کاملInvasive plant erodes local song diversity in a migratory passerine.
Exotic plant invasions threaten ecosystems globally, but we still know little about the specific consequences for animals. Invasive plants can alter the quality of breeding habitat for songbirds, thereby impacting important demographic traits such as dispersal, philopatry, and age structure. These demographic effects may in turn alter song-learning conditions to affect song structure and divers...
متن کاملSpecies diversity across the dune swales of Lake Michigan at Sturgeon Bay
The dune system of Lake Michigan at Sturgeon Bay leads back thousands of years into the surrounding forest and intermittently form small pools in the swales of the dunes. Maintained by rainwater and including a unique composition of species and chemistry, the pools of the dunes and the surrounding terrestrial life show a pattern of diversity unique to dune swales. Percent cover of species at fo...

Cardioventilatory variables and blood-gas, acid-base status were measured in cannulated white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) maintained at 19 degrees C during normocapnic and hypercapnic (Pw(CO(2)) approximately 20 Torr) water conditions and after the injection of adrenergic analogs. Hypercapnia produced significant increases in arterial PCO(2), ventilatory frequency, and plasma concentrati...
